JamesSangyoon (James) Lee is a media artist, designer, and engineer interested in computer graphics, visualization, games, physical computing and interfaces, and virtual reality. His work focuses on the design of systems for the creation of virtual world, physical interfaces, and enhancement of user’s interaction for many of media installations.

Lee had worked in computer gaming field from 1999 to 2002. Throughout this career, he had carried out a development of computer game software and design of game contents. He also has been developing virtual reality art works and looking for the meaning of the objects in real world based on the relationship among them since 2003. His recent research focuses on virtual human being so called Avatar. This aims to design and develop lifelike computer interface by digitizing real person’s figure as well as his or her nature including personality and mannerism. Fundamental methodology is to utilize natural verbal and non-verbal human communication such as voice and gestures.

Lee received a Diploma, BS and MS in Architecture from YONSEI University, Seoul, Korea in 1997 and 1999, and an MFA from school of Art and Design at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), USA in 2006. He won an honorable mention for Digital Art Awards 2006 in Japan and was awarded the best work in category of Virtual Reality Environment for 2005 Indiana IDES festival. He also received the first prize in UIC Image of Research Competition in 2010 with his PhD research project, LifeLike. Currently he is pursuing Ph.D. degree in the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL), Computer Science at UIC.
